Notre Dame's Legendary Choir Returns After Five-Year Fire Exile
The Maîtrise Notre Dame de Paris choir will return to the cathedral on December 7, 2023, after a five-year absence caused by the 2019 fire. During the restoration, the choir performed daily services at the nearby church of Saint-Germain l'Auxerrois while eagerly awaiting their homecoming. The cathedral’s eight bells rang out again on November 8, 2023, marking their first sound since the devastating fire. This milestone came as restoration efforts neared completion, allowing the historic building to reclaim its voice.
The choir, led by director Henri Chalet, has only entered the cathedral twice since the fire—once in 2020 and again in 2023. They now hope to rehearse inside before the December 7 reopening, though the schedule remains uncertain. In October 2023, the choir toured the United States, performing sold-out concerts in New York, Cleveland, Atlanta, Huntsville, Dallas, and Chicago. Their return to Paris will feature a special concert on December 17 and 18, showcasing Johann Sebastian Bach’s *Magnificat*. The reopening program spans 1,000 years of music, from medieval Gregorian chants to modern compositions. Renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma will also perform at the cathedral on March 25, 2024, as part of the celebrations. Victor Hugo once described the cathedral’s acoustics in *Notre Dame de Paris 1482*, and soon, its legendary sound will fill the space once more.
The choir’s return on December 7 will mark the end of a long wait for both the musicians and the public. With a program blending ancient and contemporary works, the performances will celebrate the cathedral’s restored grandeur and its enduring role in Parisian culture.
