Free London careers fair offers lifeline to struggling young creatives

A free careers fair for young creatives will take place in east London on June 16, 2023. Organised by the Sarabande Foundation, the event aims to support arts and fashion graduates struggling to break into the industry. It comes at a time when youth unemployment in the UK remains high, with over a million 16- to 24-year-olds not in education, work, or training.

The fair, titled What Now?, will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Sarabande’s Haggerston base. Last year’s edition attracted major brands like Burberry, Saint Laurent, and Victoria Beckham, highlighting its growing relevance in the creative sector. The event follows a successful What Now? fair in New York earlier this month. That edition saw 11 brands take part and over 600 tickets sold. Now, London’s version will offer similar opportunities for graduates seeking advice and connections.

Trino Verkade, director of Sarabande, explained that creative careers rarely follow a straight path. The fair is designed to showcase the wide range of roles available in the industry, from design to media. With AI increasingly replacing entry-level jobs, many graduates face challenges in securing work and repaying student loans.

Beyond practical advice, the fair will also provide emotional support for attendees. Organisers recognise the stress of entering a competitive field, especially when traditional career routes are disappearing. The foundation’s address, 22 Hertford Road, London N1 5SH, will host the full-day programme. The What Now? fair arrives as young creatives navigate a shifting job market. Free to attend, it offers direct access to industry professionals and potential employers. For graduates facing uncertainty, the event could provide both guidance and tangible opportunities.
