Uzbekistan and China deepen ties at Xi'an interregional forum
The Third Uzbek-Chinese Interregional Forum opened in Xi’an, China, on May 20, 2026. Running until May 22, the event focuses on strengthening ties between the two nations’ regions. Officials describe the current phase of relations as a 'golden period of development'. Uzbekistan and China have long shared historical bonds through the ancient Silk Road. This network once linked the two countries for trade, cultural exchange, and travel. Today, those connections remain strong, with over 60 weekly flights operating between major cities.
Economic cooperation has grown rapidly in recent years. Trade volumes have tripled over the past five years. Currently, 5,400 enterprises with Chinese investment operate in Uzbekistan. Regular meetings between the countries’ leaders have helped expand practical collaboration. Farhod Arziev, Uzbekistan’s Ambassador to China, highlighted the forum’s role in deepening regional partnerships. Interregional dialogue now forms a central part of the bilateral relationship. The event aims to build on existing progress and explore new opportunities for cooperation.
The forum in Xi’an marks another step in the expanding relationship between Uzbekistan and China. With rising trade, frequent flights, and growing investment, both sides continue to strengthen practical ties. The discussions will likely shape future projects between their regions.
