Davao City Hosts First-Ever EducationUSA University Fair in Mindanao

The first-ever EducationUSA University Fair took place in Davao City on May 23, 2026. Organised by the U.S. Embassy, the event brought together American universities and local students at the University of Southeastern Philippines (Usep) Obrero Campus. Officials called it a landmark moment for educational ties between the Philippines and the United States. The fair marked the first time the event was held in Mindanao, drawing praise from Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte. He congratulated the organisers for selecting the city as the venue, highlighting its significance for regional students.

George Mesthos, U.S. Embassy Deputy Director of Public Engagement, described the debut as historic. He thanked Usep President Dr. Bonifacio Gabales Jr. and the university for hosting, calling it proof of strong bilateral cooperation in education. Mesthos also urged students to embrace international opportunities, noting the high calibre of Filipino learners, especially from Mindanao.

Dr. Gabales echoed this sentiment, encouraging attendees to pursue global education. The fair connected Dabawenyo students with representatives from institutions like College of Central Florida, Lewis University, and Trine University. Testing and academic organisations, including IELTS, SAT, Pearson, and EducationUSA Philippines, also took part in the event.

Held at Usep’s Social Hall, the fair provided direct access to leading American universities. Middle Tennessee State University and other prominent schools joined to discuss study options with prospective applicants. The fair opened new pathways for Mindanao students seeking higher education abroad. With participation from top U.S. universities and testing bodies, attendees gained insights into academic opportunities. The event reinforced the growing educational partnership between the two nations.
