Uttar Pradesh merges farming with animal husbandry to slash chemical fertiliser use
The Uttar Pradesh government is pushing for a major shift in farming practices by linking agriculture with animal husbandry. The move aims to boost farmers’ earnings while cutting reliance on chemical fertilisers. Officials are now drafting plans to expand organic farming and promote cow dung-based products across the state. A key part of the strategy involves turning cow shelters into production hubs for compost, Jeevamrit, and other organic materials. The government estimates that lakhs of metric tons of compost can be generated, helping farmers switch to natural alternatives. Standardised quality checks will also be introduced to ensure the reliability of cow dung-based manure.
Plans are underway to set up more gobar gas plants and expand compressed biogas (CBG) facilities. Alongside production, the state wants to create a strong marketing system for organic manure. Officials have also instructed the development of low-cost models for cow dung products, making them more accessible to farmers.
The broader goal is to reduce chemical fertiliser use through large-scale organic manure production. A detailed action plan is being finalised for the production, distribution, and sale of compost, biogas, Jeevamrit, and Ghanamrit. The government sees this as a way to support both farmers and environmental conservation. The initiative will focus on increasing organic output while ensuring affordability and quality. By repurposing cow shelters and promoting biogas, the state expects to create a sustainable cycle for farmers. The push for standardisation and marketing aims to make organic farming a viable long-term option.
