NY SWIMS Initiative opens $53M in grants for safer swimming access

New York State has launched the second round of its NY SWIMS Initiative, offering $53 million in grants for swimming facilities. The programme aims to tackle extreme heat by expanding access to safe pools and natural swimming spots. Governor Kathy Hochul announced the new funding opportunity this week. The NY SWIMS Initiative provides competitive grants for building, renovating, or improving swimming pools and natural water areas. Eligible projects include new facilities, upgrades to existing ones, and related infrastructure like bathhouses, restrooms, and accessibility features. At least $25 million of the funding is set aside for underserved communities to ensure fair access.

The initiative is managed by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, with the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York handling administration. Grant amounts range from £250,000 to £10 million, but applicants must cover 20% of total project costs themselves.

Since its start, NY SWIMS has already awarded nearly £150 million to 37 projects across the state. This second round opens for applications on September 24, 2025, with a deadline of October 30. Successful recipients will be announced no earlier than December 15, 2025. The new funding will help communities create or upgrade swimming facilities, addressing both recreational needs and climate challenges. With £53 million available, the initiative continues to support safer access to water-based activities. Successful projects will be chosen based on their impact and readiness to proceed.
