Nazarbayev University unveils partial scholarships amid record applicant surge

Nazarbayev University (NU) has introduced partial scholarships for the first time this year. The move comes after a record number of applicants competed for a limited number of state-funded places. Over 12,000 candidates vied for just 1,250 fully funded scholarships.

The number of applicants to NU has risen sharply in recent years. In 2024, around 8,000 students applied, but by 2025, that figure had climbed to over 10,000. This year’s total surpassed all previous records.

More than 4,000 candidates met the minimum admission standards, with average IELTS scores of 7.5 and SAT results between 1,500 and 1,550. Yet, only 1,250 received full government funding. To support those who qualified but missed out, NU now offers partial scholarships covering 10% to 20% of tuition fees. The decision also reflects broader trends in education. Many families in Kazakhstan are choosing local universities over foreign options due to geopolitical uncertainty. NU’s dormitory fees, at 20,000 tenge per month, remain more affordable than those in China or Dubai. With academic competition growing each year, the partial scholarships provide an alternative for strong applicants who did not secure full funding. The university has extended this option to all candidates who passed admissions but lacked state support.

The new partial scholarships allow more students to enrol at NU despite limited government funding. Those who qualify academically but missed out on full grants can now receive financial assistance. The university expects this to ease pressure on families while maintaining high admission standards.
