Day of Math Magic in Ingolstadt: Where Math Whizzes Shine
Mathematics Enthusiasts Showcase Logical Thinking and Teamwork in Ingolstadt Event
BREAKING NEWS
Eichstätt, 18.3.2025 - Around 50 genius minds from various high schools in and around Ingolstadt took part in a day filled with brain-racking numbers and geometric wonders. Hosted by the cutting-edge Institute of Machine Learning and Data Science at the Catholic University, this high-octane event was part of a nationwide Math Extravaganza, with nearly 1,000 students across Germany diving headfirst into the world of numbers.
The gifted students from Pfaffenhofen, Scheyern, Eichstätt, Schrobenhausen, Königsbrunn, and Ingolstadt juggled individual and team competitions in the heart of Ingolstadt. Simultaneously, other Math Whizzes from locations like Frankfurt, Fulda, or Kassel tackled identical challenges. Kai Duchon, a bright spark from Gymnasium Schrobenhausen, shared his thoughts on the tasks set by the Center for Mathematics: "First, you have to crack the code of what they're asking for."
Theáchères Gymnasium Ingolstadt, home to the Math Extravaganza, took the group competition by storm and bagged the top prize. In the individual ranking, Timothy Schaff from the Katharinen-Gymnasium claimed the first spot, followed by Luca Landinger from Reuchlin Gymnasium and Johannes Pabst, another star from Katharinen-Gymnasium. The shining stars received coveted passes to an exclusive modeling week organized by the Center for Mathematics.
Yet, all students walked away winners, having had the opportunity to geek out over their passion for mathematics in a fun, out-of-school setting, as highlighted by Jeanne Jean-Joseph from Gymnasium Königsbrunn: "What tickles my fancy about mathematics is its sheer logic." For her, math is an all-encompassing language.
Meanwhile, students Ferdinand Schleeh and Xenia Fensterle from the "Audi Dual" program shed light on the professional world’s applications of their favorite subject.
Prof. Dr. Nadja Ray, the academic brains behind the Math Extravaganza, summed up the day: "This Math Extravaganza was a game-changer for the students, as it combined a team challenge, a feature uncommon in regular math competitions." The innovative concept of the Math Extravaganza was lauded by the mayor of Schernfeld, Stefan Bauer, a math geek himself, who generously covered the participation fee of eight euros per student.
