Magadan's cultural revival wins national acclaim with heritage and innovation
Magadan Region Official Website, March 25 – An expanded meeting of the Collegium of the Magadan Region's Ministry of Culture and Tourism was held at the Mayak Park Cultural and Community Center. The event brought together deputy heads of municipal districts for social affairs, directors of culture departments and divisions, as well as heads and staff of cultural institutions from across the Magadan Region, the regional government's press service reports.
Tatyana Savchenko, Deputy Chair of the Magadan Regional Government, congratulated attendees on Culture Workers' Day, celebrated annually in Russia on March 25.
"This holiday is a mark of deep respect for you—those whose talent and achievements uphold the significance of cultural traditions and values. You foster vital connections between generations, inspiring people to think, feel, and empathize. Both the Russian Federation and the Magadan Regional Government place special emphasis on preserving cultural heritage. In 2026, we continue implementing initiatives under the Family national project, which has given a powerful boost to the region's cultural sector," Savchenko noted.
The deputy chair also announced that infrastructure improvements remain a priority this year: repairs are underway at the A.S. Pushkin Regional Library, as well as at the Seimchan Museum and the Magadan Cultural Center. According to her, these institutions are transforming not only in appearance but also in substance.
Savchenko highlighted that the winners of a nationwide competition for best practices in cultural work include Magadan's Cultural Center and Pionerny House of Culture, the Palatka and Ust-Omchug community centers, the A.S. Pushkin Library, and the Regional Youth Library. She added that, under the Unified Presidential Subsidy, a third workshop—Performing Arts—will open at the College of Arts, while Ust-Omchug in the Tenkin District will host the region's third School of Creative Industries, based at the local children's art school.
Additionally, the deputy chair reported that the Zemsky Culture Worker program is ongoing in the region, with 19 specialists expected to arrive in 2026. As this year has been declared the Year of National Unity in Russia, cultural institutions across all municipal districts have planned over 2,000 events in various formats for audiences of all ages.
2026 also marks the 150th anniversary of the Union of Theater Workers. A plan has been developed, and the Compass of Inspiration School Theater Festival—running from March to October—has launched. Theater troupes are scheduled to tour municipal districts with performances.
Tatiana Savchenko highlighted the achievements of the first three months of 2026: the Olsky School of Creative Industries won the nationwide competition organized by Russia's Ministry of Education by composing melodies for school bells across the country—three of the six approved tunes were created in Kolyma. The project "Between the Sea and the Taiga: The History of Kolyma Settlements," led by the Magadan Regional Public Organization of Cultural Workers, was named one of the best initiatives in Russia by the Presidential Grants Foundation. The Youth Library secured support for "Severnost," a youth project exploring the region's history and culture. Meanwhile, the Magadan branch of "Cultural Volunteers" will bring the all-Russian exhibition "Culture for Victory" to the city this year as part of a grant-funded initiative.
The deputy chair of the regional government also noted that young cultural professionals had been selected for the "ArtMasters" competition and joined the Far Eastern Federal District's team to collaborate on a theatrical production in Vladivostok, which will later be staged in Moscow. Additionally, three works by an instructor and students from the Olsky School of Arts' animation studio made the shortlist of the international "SuzdalFest" Animation Film Festival—competing alongside renowned studios such as "Soyuzmultfilm,""Parovoz," and "Mult Efir."
