Castel Primary School to Trial a School Street
Castel Primary School tests 'school street' to cut traffic and boost safety
Castel Primary School is the latest to trial a 'school street' on nearby roads - aiming to help pupils make their way to lessons safely.
After the Easter holidays, sections of Ruette de la Generate and Rue de la Masse will be closed to through traffic before and after the school day.
This is intended to encourage children to walk, cycle, or scoot to school.

School streets have already been set up near St Martin's and La Houguette primaries and near Oatlands to benefit pupils at the Baubigny schools.
Castel Primary's headteacher, Peter Curtis is pleased his school is now starting on the path towards joining them.
I am delighted we are trialling this School Street for Castel Primary. Managing cars and drivers is an ever-increasing demand on school staff time, and I am positive this will keep students here safer and healthier. Pupils themselves have raised concerns regarding the number of cars in and around school, as well as the poor choices some drivers make, so I am pleased that we are responding to this issue.
An 'informal trial' will run throughout the summer term, which starts after the Easter holidays in mid-April.
From then until the schools break up in July, drivers will be directed away from Ruette de la Generotte between the junctions with Ruette de Fries and Rue de la Masse, and away from Rue de la Masse between the junction with Mont D'Aval and Rue des Deslisles and the junction with Rue St Germain.
These sections of road will be closed to most traffic on weekdays between 08:15 and 09:00 and between 14:45 and 15:30.
The idea is to offer uninterrupted pedestrian access to the footpaths leading to Saumarez Park, the area around Les Beaucamps High School, and Kings Mills.
Cyclists will still be allowed through, along with school buses and drivers accessing properties along those roads.
Anyone else just driving through, or heading for the school will be diverted on to other roads.
Those heading to the school are encouraged to use active travel alternatives to reach their destination said Paul James, Traffic and Highway Services Road Safety Officer.
The School Street scheme has already proved successful for an increasing number of schools throughout the island, and this latest informal trial aims to build on that to further increase active travel options for students and other vulnerable road users around Castel Primary School.
Being so close to Saumarez Park means this particular scheme can connect our active travel network to footpaths and other quieter roads that run through some of the most scenic and tranquil areas of our island.
The new school street near Castel Primary School will go through an 'informal trial' first, and if that is successful an official trial will be held in the future - potentially later this year, in the next school year.
The informal trial will begin on Tuesday 14 April when the summer school term starts. It is planned to run until at least Friday 8 May, during which time Traffic & Highway Services will be monitoring how it is used.
That data will then be used to decide if an official nine-12 month trial should take place.
If those trials prove to be successful the school street could be formalised in the future.
