Lehigh University breaks Fulbright Scholarship record with 12 recipients

Lehigh University has set a new record for Fulbright Scholarship recipients in a single year. Three students were named as finalists or alternates for the 2026-27 programme, bringing the university’s total to 12—its highest ever. The Fulbright Program, funded by the U.S. government, supports international academic exchanges for thousands of participants annually.

Afiwa Afandalo ’24 will travel to Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon, as an English teaching assistant. She expressed enthusiasm for the country’s bilingual education system, where both French and English are used in schools.

Kendalin Flores ’26 was selected for marine biology research in the Dominican Republic. There, she will develop an AI-forecasting model to predict coral spawning, a project aimed at supporting marine conservation efforts. Karina Makhani ’26, a computer science and business major, remains an alternate for a master’s programme in applied sciences and engineering. If selected, she will study at Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Belgium. Her application is still under review. Lehigh’s previous Fulbright numbers included six recipients in 2018-19 and five in 2022-23. This year’s total of 12—comprising nine faculty members and three students—marks the university’s most successful cycle yet.

The three students will contribute to education, research, and technological development abroad if their placements are finalised. Their selections reflect Lehigh’s growing participation in the Fulbright Program, which promotes cross-cultural exchange and academic collaboration worldwide.
