Germany Overtakes US and UK as Top Study Destination for Indian Students
Germany has become the top study-abroad destination for Indian students, particularly those from smaller cities. A new survey shows 75% of respondents from these areas now favour Germany over traditional choices like the US or UK. The country’s mix of affordability, strong job prospects, and clear immigration pathways is driving its growing popularity. Nearly 80% of Indian students aspire to study overseas, but cost and employment outcomes remain key hurdles. Over half of those surveyed—55%—cited these as the biggest barriers to pursuing education abroad. Germany stands out by offering globally recognised degrees without the $60,000 to $100,000 debt burden often tied to US or UK universities.
The country’s appeal has widened beyond its traditional strength in engineering. An expanding range of English-taught programmes now attracts students from diverse academic backgrounds. This shift has helped Germany surpass 400,000 international students, with India as the largest source market at nearly 59,000 enrolments. Long-term prospects also play a role in Germany’s popularity. Around 46% of Indian students remain in the country a decade after starting their studies. The transparent pathway from student visa to job-seeker visa, EU Blue Card, and permanent residency makes settling easier. For 69% of respondents, post-study employment opportunities heavily influence their decision to study abroad. While Germany leads, other nations still attract significant interest. The US follows at 68%, with the UK (62%), Australia (55%), and Canada (50%) also ranking highly among Indian students.
Germany’s combination of low costs, strong career pathways, and respected qualifications has cemented its position as the preferred study destination. With nearly half of Indian students staying long-term, the country’s policies appear to be working. The trend suggests more students from smaller cities will continue choosing Germany over pricier alternatives in the coming years.
