Duolingo English Test overhauls format with stricter security and interactive tasks
The Duolingo English Test (DET) has rolled out major updates to its format, security and scoring. Over 5,800 universities and institutions—including Harvard, MIT and Imperial College London—now recognise the test for admissions. The changes also bring a fresh visual style in line with the main Duolingo app. Starting 1 July, DET Version 9 will feature fully interactive tasks. A new 'interactive speaking' section will replace older question types. The update aims to make the test more engaging while keeping it accessible.
Security has also been tightened. Test-takers must now use a secondary camera and complete mobile-first ID checks. These steps reduce the risk of fraud and ensure fair testing conditions.
Scores will now align with two major language frameworks: the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) and the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This makes it easier for institutions to compare results with other standardised tests.
Duolingo will host an industry webinar on Wednesday, 12 June at 10:00am AEST. The session will explain the latest changes in detail and answer questions from educators and test administrators. The updated DET now offers stronger security, clearer score comparisons and a more interactive experience. With wider acceptance from top universities, the test continues to expand as a flexible alternative to traditional English proficiency exams. Institutions and test-takers can learn more during the upcoming webinar.
