Hawaii's Volcano School of Arts and Sciences to Build $43.8M Campus by 2032
Volcano School of Arts and Sciences (VSAS), a public charter school in Hawaii, is set to expand with a new 14.9-acre campus. The project, planned for completion by 2032, will accommodate more students and modernise facilities. Construction will begin soon, following a phased approach to development. The school currently operates across two sites, but one lease expires in 2028, pushing the need for expansion. The new campus, located on Old Volcano Road near Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, will serve pre-kindergarten, middle, and high school students. Each section will have its own dedicated labs, workshops, and recreation areas.
Phase I of the project includes building a driveway and portable classrooms for middle and high school pupils. The first stage alone costs $3.5 million, with $1.5 million already secured. The full expansion is expected to reach $43.8 million. The campus design features a central courtyard, administrative offices, a cafeteria, and an amphitheatre for events. Elementary students will stay at the existing campus, which is also being upgraded to increase capacity. Once complete, the expansion will allow VSAS to enrol 287 more students, bringing the total to 647. A draft environmental assessment confirmed no major ecological concerns from the construction. The project will proceed as planned, with further phases to follow.
The new campus will provide updated facilities for hundreds of students by 2032. With phased construction underway, VSAS aims to secure the remaining funds needed for the $43.8 million project. The expansion ensures long-term space for learning while maintaining environmental standards.
