From Patient to Advocate: Dr. Biheng's Fight Against Sickle Cell Disease
Dr. Stephan Biheng has spent his life battling sickle cell disease while working to improve healthcare for others. Diagnosed at 19, he recently earned a doctoral degree in organisational leadership with a focus on health administration. His research now targets better access to care for underserved communities—especially in Cameroon, where the disease remains a critical public health challenge. Dr. Biheng’s struggle with sickle cell disease began in childhood, though he was not formally diagnosed until age 19. The condition causes severe pain, chronic fatigue, organ damage, and a heightened risk of infections. Over the years, he has received treatment across multiple countries, including Tunisia, France, Romania, and the US.
His academic journey led him to Grand Canyon University, where he completed a doctoral degree in organisational leadership with an emphasis on healthcare administration. His dissertation, *Religious Leaders’ Approaches to Promote Sickle Cell Disease Awareness and Prevention through Education*, explores how faith leaders can drive screening and education efforts. Cameroon faces a severe sickle cell crisis, with around 7,000 children born with the disease annually. Many do not survive past the age of five. Dr. Biheng’s work focuses on evidence-based strategies to make healthcare more accessible, particularly in low-income regions. He argues that religious leaders, given their influence, can help reduce stigma and encourage early testing. Beyond research, he has worked as a medical doctor and researcher in France, Romania, and the US. His goal remains clear: to raise awareness and improve prevention through community-driven education.
Dr. Biheng’s research highlights the role of education and faith-based outreach in combating sickle cell disease. His efforts aim to lower mortality rates in high-risk areas like Cameroon. By involving religious leaders, he hopes to create lasting change for those affected by the condition.
