Freiburg's Museums Offer Free Entry and Activities on May 17, 2026

Freiburg’s museums will open their doors for free on International Museum Day, May 17, 2026. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., offering visitors a chance to explore art, history, and science without charge. Five local institutions will take part, each providing unique activities for all ages. The Augustinermuseum will feature family tours, hands-on creative workshops, and live demonstrations on the historic Welte piano. Visitors can also explore its collections through guided sessions.

At the Museum of New Art, interactive tours will guide guests through contemporary works. Sports-themed workshops will keep families engaged, blending movement with artistic discovery. The Museum of Nature and Human focuses on the natural world, with stations dedicated to bees, butterflies, and other wildlife. Interactive exhibits will let visitors learn through direct experience. The Colombischlössle Archaeological Museum invites guests to try runic writing and button-making. Family-friendly tours will explore artefacts from different historical periods. The Nazi Documentation Center will provide guided tours, in-depth workshops, and access to research materials. Its programme aims to educate visitors on historical events and their lasting impact.
