Braunschweig's €20M digital transport upgrade delivers real-time travel updates

A major digital upgrade for public transport in the Greater Braunschweig region has now been completed. The project brings real-time travel updates to hundreds of stops, including two new displays in Schladen-Werla. Over €20 million has been invested to improve passenger information across more than 20 municipalities. The project began nearly ten years ago but faced setbacks when a key manufacturer of dynamic passenger information (DFI) systems filed for insolvency. Despite delays, the work has now rolled out around 460 DFI displays at bus and light rail stops. An additional 100 smaller digital screens have been installed at less busy locations, bringing the total to roughly 560 information points.

The new displays provide live updates on arrivals, departures, and service changes. They also warn travellers about disruptions, delays, and other essential alerts. Each screen includes audio modules to ensure visually impaired passengers can access the information. Funding for the €20 million project came largely from public sources. The state of Lower Saxony covered 75% of the costs, while the Regional Association contributed an extra 12.5%. The DFI systems alone accounted for around €11 million of the total investment. Beyond physical displays, the system feeds data to passenger apps and online journey planners. This means travellers can check real-time updates from their phones or computers at any time.

The completed project now delivers up-to-date travel information across the region. Passengers at 560 stops can access live updates, while audio features improve accessibility. The investment ensures smoother journeys for bus and light rail users in over 20 municipalities.
