Scripps Oceanography Launches Grant to Transform Undergraduate Teaching
Scripps Institution of Oceanography has opened applications for its Undergraduate Instructional Improvement Grant. The scheme funds projects designed to enhance teaching and learning across its undergraduate programmes. All faculty, lecturers, and academic staff involved in undergraduate instruction are encouraged to apply. The grant supports a wide range of initiatives aimed at improving student education. Funded items can include new instructional materials, specialised equipment, software, and learning assessment tools. Travel expenses related to course development may also be covered.
Proposals are welcome on topics such as technology integration, teaching assistant effectiveness, and course redevelopment. The programme prioritises projects with a lasting impact on courses rather than short-term updates. However, requests for routine course maintenance, student wages, or standard teaching materials will not be considered. Awards typically reach up to $6,000, though larger grants are available through the UCSD Course Development and Instructional Improvement Program (CDIIP). Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, with decisions issued within two to four weeks. Successful applicants must submit a final report upon project completion.
The grant aims to foster long-term improvements in undergraduate teaching at Scripps. Eligible staff can submit proposals at any time, with funding available for innovative projects that strengthen student learning. Further details and application guidelines are provided through the institution’s academic support office.
