After Five Years of Wandering, She Finally Found Home in Chiang Mai

At 41, Elka Requinta has spent half a decade searching for a place to call home. After years of moving between countries, she now lives in Chiang Mai, Thailand, where she has found stability and a sense of belonging. The journey wasn’t straightforward—it took disasters, false starts, and careful choices to get here. Requinta’s travels began in earnest five years ago. She first settled in Siargao, a surfing haven in the southern Philippines, and stayed for two years. But in 2021, a super typhoon struck the island, and she shifted her focus to disaster relief efforts.

Next, she tried Bali, but the crowded streets and chaotic energy left her restless. The search continued until 2023, when she arrived in Chiang Mai. There, she secured a Long-Term Resident (LTR) visa, allowing her to stay for five years with a six-month extension. Now, her days follow a steady rhythm. She writes at a dedicated desk, attends barre classes, and walks by the lake. The city’s tight-knit community has given her a security she hadn’t felt in years. With a Destination Thailand visa in hand, she’s finally found a pace that suits her.

Requinta’s five-year journey has led her to a quiet life in Chiang Mai. The visa ensures she can stay long-term, and the routines she’s built—writing, exercise, and local connections—have brought a stability she once thought elusive. For now, this is where she belongs.
