Russia's Hidden Coastal Wonders: From Magnetic Sands to Glass Beaches
Russia’s coastline hides some of nature’s most striking beaches. From volcanic black sands to shores covered in glass fragments, each location offers something rare. These unique spots attract visitors with their unusual colours, textures and marine life.
In the Far East, Iturup Island in the Kuril chain stands out for its magnetic sand. The grains contain titanomagnetite, a mineral that makes the shore feel slightly metallic underfoot. Farther south, near Vladivostok, Glass Pebble Beach glitters with smooth, multicoloured glass fragments. The pebbles formed over decades as waves tumbled discarded glass against the rocks. Authorities now ban visitors from taking them to preserve the site.
On the Kamchatka Peninsula, two beaches showcase volcanic and marine wonders. Khalaktyrsky Beach features jet-black sand rich in minerals from past eruptions. Meanwhile, Malaya Lagernaya Bay’s seabed is thickly carpeted with starfish, creating a living mosaic beneath the water. Crimea’s shores offer their own surprises. Cape Tarkhankut and the village of Olenyovka boast powdery white sand and crystal-clear waters, earning Olenyovka the nickname 'Russia’s Maldives'. Nearby, the Generalsky Beaches stretch for 30 kilometres, their sand made entirely of crushed shells. The water here remains unusually transparent, with visibility reaching impressive depths. On Sakhalin Island, Sokol Beach combines dramatic scenery with polished pebbles. Towering sea stacks rise from the surf, framing a shore covered in smooth, rounded stones.
These beaches highlight Russia’s diverse coastal landscapes. Each location—whether magnetic, glass-strewn, or starfish-filled—draws attention for its natural oddities. Strict protections, like the ban on removing glass pebbles, help ensure these rare features remain intact for future visitors.
