Solar panel owners now embrace battery storage at record rates
More homeowners are now pairing solar panels with battery storage systems. The trend reflects growing concerns over power cuts and changes in energy pricing. Nearly half of Americans regularly worry about losing electricity at home.
Over the past two years, the number of solar projects including batteries has more than doubled. In 2022, over 17% of residential solar installations featured a battery—up from just 8.1% in 2020. The rise in battery adoption comes as net metering rates drop in many areas. Lower payments for excess solar power sent back to the grid push homeowners toward self-supply. Batteries let them store solar energy for later use instead of selling it cheaply.
Modern home batteries also offer backup power during outages. Some models even integrate with electric vehicle chargers, making them more versatile. Intelligent scheduling features help maximise savings by using stored energy when electricity prices peak.
Most home batteries carry warranties of around 10 years or 7,300 charge cycles. However, their lifespan depends on how they’re used. Frequent overcharging or trickle charging can wear them out faster. High temperatures also shorten the life of lithium-ion batteries, reducing their overall efficiency over time.
Looking ahead, the trend shows no signs of slowing. Around 70% of solar homeowners now plan to add a battery system in the future. The shift toward home energy storage is driven by practical needs and financial incentives. With more people seeking reliability and better returns on solar investments, battery installations are set to keep rising. Manufacturers continue improving technology to meet demand for longer-lasting, smarter systems.
