Nizhny Novgorod Teacher Wins Regional Award with Hands-On Science Lessons

The Ministry of Education of the Nizhny Novgorod Region has announced that the regional stage of Russia's national Teacher of the Year competition has concluded in Nizhny Novgorod.

Roman Smirnov, a chemistry and biology teacher at School No. 118 in Nizhny Novgorod, took first place.

"My key approach is connecting chemistry to real life. When I explain reactions using baking soda and vinegar in cooking, students become more engaged and open," the teacher said.

"For me, teaching is about being in dialogue with them. My students' recognition means more than any competition. Contests come and go, but students stay—and each year brings new ones. That's what makes this a long-term, meaningful journey for me," he added.

"Being a teacher means the power and purpose behind every word, attention to detail, and staying true to your path. It's immense work, built on experience and deep knowledge. But at its core lies the ability to love people—flawed, diverse, sometimes contradictory. All of this defines our region's best teacher of 2026! I wish Roman Nikolayevich every success in the national finals," said Mikhail Puchkov, Minister of Education of the Nizhny Novgorod Region.

Earlier reports noted that Nizhny Novgorod Mayor Yury Shalabayev and Education Minister Mikhail Puchkov had signed an interagency cooperation agreement to streamline state regulation of educational activities.

The agreement aims to improve oversight and accreditation of educational institutions while reducing bureaucratic burdens on teachers.
