New Bilingual Book Kholia Celebrates Even and Russian Fairy Tales in Magadan
A new bilingual book, Kholia, has been unveiled in Magadan, showcasing 23 fairy tales in both Russian and Even. The collection reflects the deep cultural heritage of the Indigenous peoples of the North. Its launch on April 28 was supported by the Magadan Regional Government and the company Polymetal. Kholia is the latest work by author Chyna Motorova, who has now published four books. Her passion for the folklore and traditions of Northern Indigenous communities inspired this project. This marks her third collaboration with Pavel Zhdanov, director of Okhotnik Publishing House, who carefully curated the tales for the collection.
The book’s Russian-to-Even translation was handled by native speaker Fyodor Gubichan, ensuring the precision and rhythm of the Zhizhigin dialect remained intact. Renowned animator Alexander Khramtsov contributed the illustrations, adding a visual richness to the stories. The publication itself is a high-quality production, featuring a durable hardcover, modern printing techniques, and a UV varnish made from a fast-curing, child-safe polymer. The project received financial backing from the Magadan Regional Government and *Polymetal*, allowing the book to reach a wider audience while preserving Indigenous storytelling traditions.
Kholia is now available as a bilingual hardcover, offering readers both Russian and Even versions of the tales. The book’s release highlights ongoing efforts to document and share the cultural legacy of the North’s Indigenous peoples. Support from local authorities and private partners ensured its production and presentation in Magadan.
