Maharashtra's MHT-CET now offers two exam attempts for fairer admissions

Maharashtra has introduced a major change to its higher education admission process by offering two attempts at the MHT-CET examination. This reform aims to ease academic pressure and give students a better chance of securing admission. The first round of tests took place in April 2026, with a second opportunity held in May. The 'First Opportunity' PCB CET examination ran from April 21 to April 26, 2026. Out of 284,063 registered candidates, 263,206 attended, while 20,906 remained absent. The tests were conducted smoothly across 184 centres in all 36 districts of Maharashtra.

For the second attempt, held on May 10 and 11, 116,540 students registered, with 95,634 appearing for the test. The overall attendance rate for both examinations reached 82.06%. Students must take at least one exam, but the second attempt is optional. Under the new system, candidates can use the better percentile score from either examination when applying for admission. The Maharashtra State Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell organised both rounds, ensuring a streamlined process.

The two-attempt format marks a significant shift in Maharashtra’s admission process. Students now have more flexibility to improve their scores and secure places in higher education. The reform reflects efforts to create a fairer and less stressful system for aspiring candidates.
