A new neighbourhood of 75 low-carbon homes has been proposed in Cheshire, as part of plans to create more sustainable and affordable housing in the UK.
Knutsford's 75-home eco-neighbourhood blends sustainability with community living
The Crown Estate and developer igloo have submitted a planning application for the scheme, which would be built off Manchester Road in Knutsford.
If approved, the development would include a mix of housing types, from one-bedroom maisonettes to five-bedroom family homes. Around 30% of the homes would be classed as affordable housing about about 40% would be designed to be accessible.
The plans place a strong focus on green space and community living. The development would feature pedestrian-friendly streets and limited road infrastructure.
Meanwhile, more than 80 trees are expected to be planted, alongside biodiversity-focused landscaping and a central pond. The scheme is designed to deliver over 15% biodiversity net gain, meaning it would leave local nature in a better condition than before.
There would also be communal gardens, play areas and a shared pavilion for community events and social activity.
Michelle Williams, project director at igloo, said: 'This is a genuinely exciting moment for the project. At Knutsford, we have the opportunity to demonstrate what the future of sustainable neighbourhoods can look like in practice - combining low-carbon living with high-quality design and meaningful placemaking.
'Through our footprint methodology, we've brought together innovative construction, biodiversity and community-focused design to create a place that is not only environmentally responsible, but also enjoyable and inclusive for the people who will live here.'
The proposals have been developed in line with Cheshire East Council's Local Plan and follow engagement with local residents and stakeholders.
Rob Chesworth, Head of Strategic Land at The Crown Estate, added: 'Across the country, we need to find new ways to deliver homes and communities that are affordable, sustainable and sensitive to the local area.
'This is exactly what our proposals in Knutsford are seeking to provide. By working together with the local community and exploring the relationship between innovation, affordability and nature, we can shape a template for future housing not only in Knutsford, but throughout the UK.'
