India's top 100 medical colleges for 2026 blend legacy and innovation

A new ranking of India’s top 100 medical colleges for 2026 has been released. The list highlights a mix of long-standing institutions and newer centres of excellence. It includes government-run colleges, private universities, and prestigious AIIMS campuses across the country. The rankings feature institutions from more than twenty states and union territories. Among them, AIIMS New Delhi remains the most sought-after choice for medical students. Other top contenders include JIPMER Puducherry, which dates back to 1823, and newer AIIMS campuses established after 2018.

The expansion of the AIIMS network has brought high-quality medical education to cities like Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, and Nagpur. Alongside these, state government colleges and private institutions also produce skilled clinicians and researchers. However, competition for seats is fierce, with over a million students taking the NEET exam each year.

Rank alone does not determine the best fit for aspiring doctors. Factors like location, faculty expertise, and research opportunities also play a key role in decision-making. The list reflects both historic and modern medical education hubs in India. With limited seats available, students must weigh multiple aspects before choosing a college. The rankings serve as a guide for those aiming to enter the medical field in 2026.
