HOCHRHÖNER Trail Celebrates 20 Years with Scenic Hikes and Local Flavors
The 20th anniversary of the long-distance trail DER HOCHRHÖNER was marked with a weekend of guided hikes and local celebrations. From May 8 to 10, 2026, walkers explored the Bavarian section of the route, enjoying scenic views and cultural highlights. The event also showcased regional food, healing waters, and the natural beauty of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve. The festivities kicked off with a hike through the UNESCO Rhön Biosphere Reserve, tracing the Bavarian stages of the trail. On the second day, participants climbed from Frauenroth to Kreuzberg, known as the 'Holy Mountain of the Franconians'. The route continued to the Schwedenwall, offering sweeping views and lessons on the area’s geology and skiing history.
The weekend also featured a healing water tasting in Bad Kissingen’s spa gardens. Naturpark rangers led guided tours, sharing insights into the region’s landscape and traditions. Johannes Metz, managing director of Rhön GmbH, highlighted the success of the event and the strong collaboration behind it. After Bavaria, the anniversary hikes will move to Hesse from August 1 to 9, 2026. Thuringia will follow with its own celebrations from September 2 to 20, 2026. The final day in Bavaria focused on local connections, with food and activities under the theme 'Taste the Rhön'.
The anniversary hikes were organised with support from Rhön GmbH, the Rhön Club, and other regional partners. The events celebrated two decades of the HOCHRHÖNER trail while promoting the natural and cultural heritage of the Rhön region. Further hikes in Hesse and Thuringia will continue the celebrations later in the year.
