Fürth's primary school launches Klasse2000 to teach kids healthy habits early
Maistraße Primary School Buzzes with Activity as Health Initiative Launches
There's a hive of activity at Maistraße Primary School today, but math and writing aren't the only items on the agenda. Headteacher Mirjam Schuh is welcoming guests who bring with them a long-term investment in children's health. With the official handover of sponsorship certificates by AOK Bayern, the "Klasse2000" prevention program is now launching in the region.
The initiative, which supports children from first through fourth grade, takes a playful approach. External prevention specialists regularly visit classrooms to teach topics like healthy eating, relaxation, and conflict resolution in an age-appropriate way. In-person lessons are supplemented by digital resources: through the "Klaro App" and the website klaro-labor.de, students, parents, and teachers can access interactive movement breaks and calming stories.
Germany's largest primary school health promotion program targets the critical years when lifelong habits take shape. Around 165 first-graders across Fürth are participating this school year, including pupils from Maistraße Primary, as well as Pestalozzistraße, Seeackerstraße, and Clara and Dr. Isaak Hallermann schools—all backed by the health insurance provider. Anna Löffler, AOK's team leader for market and health, underscores the importance of early prevention. "Children who learn mindful eating and physical activity habits at a young age are far more likely to carry those behaviors into adulthood," she explains.
Since 2015, AOK has funded up to two classes per grade level in each participating school, covering the full four-year cost of the program. With over 400 new sponsorships in Bavaria alone and nearly 43,400 children reached nationwide, AOK claims to be the program's largest single sponsor in Germany. The goal? To help boys and girls grow up confidently while developing essential life skills from an early age.
