Faith Communities Unite to Rebuild After Devastating 2025 Wildfires
Faith communities across Pacific Palisades, Altadena, and Pasadena are rebuilding after devastating fires struck in January 2025. The blaze destroyed homes, places of worship, and personal belongings, leaving hundreds of families displaced. In response, local leaders have turned to interfaith cooperation to support recovery efforts and restore hope.
The fire, fuelled by strong winds, caused widespread destruction in early 2025. Rabbi Amy Bernstein lost both her home and synagogue, while Brother Satyananda, a senior monk at the Self Realization Fellowship, saw his living quarters and possessions reduced to ashes. In Pacific Palisades alone, 300 out of 900 families were directly affected.
Pastors and religious leaders quickly shifted their focus beyond spiritual guidance. Many, like Pastor Jonathan DeCuir, began meeting with local officials and Governor Gavin Newsom to push for faster recovery. Others had to navigate unfamiliar challenges, from insurance claims to land use regulations, all while continuing to support their congregations.
Interfaith partnerships have played a crucial role in the recovery. Rev. Grace Park noted that these relationships have grown stronger since the disaster. Pastor BJ King launched a new initiative, bringing together therapists and community members in need of mental health support. Meanwhile, Kehillat Israel announced plans to return their Torah scrolls to their sanctuary in a special ceremony on May 15, 2025.
Progress is already visible. On April 26, 2025, Altadena Fountain of Life Church broke ground on a new sanctuary, marking a significant step forward. The rebuilding efforts reflect both resilience and unity among the affected communities.
The fires left deep scars, but faith leaders have worked together to address both practical and emotional needs. With new programs, ongoing construction, and strengthened interfaith bonds, the communities are slowly moving toward recovery. The return of sacred items and the rebuilding of worship spaces signal a gradual return to normalcy.
