Denver and Arizona pioneer faster, cheaper degrees to fill skilled labor gaps
New education pathways are emerging to meet the growing demand for skilled workers. In Denver and Arizona, innovative programmes now allow students to earn degrees faster and at lower costs. These changes come as millions of jobs requiring postsecondary qualifications are expected by 2031. Denver Public Schools has become the first P-12 system in Colorado—and one of the first in the U.S.—to award higher education degrees directly. Students can now complete an associate degree through a mix of apprenticeships and general education courses. Superintendent Alex Marrero aims to break down the traditional divide between high school, college, and careers.
Meanwhile, in Arizona, Yavapai College offers a three-year bachelor’s degree in business for under $10,000. The programme eliminates textbook costs and extra fees, making it accessible for students juggling work, family, or financial constraints. Yavapai is among the first community colleges in the country to provide a bachelor’s degree in just three years. The push for faster, more affordable education comes as demand for skilled workers rises. Research from Georgetown University predicts that 85% of the 15.2 million new jobs by 2031 will require some form of postsecondary training. At the same time, the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center reports a 19.1% jump in undergraduate certificate enrolment from 2022 to 2024. With over 4.1 million Americans set to turn 65 in the next two years, the need for a skilled workforce is becoming more urgent.
These programmes provide quicker, cheaper routes to qualifications as industries face a shrinking labour pool. Denver and Yavapai’s models could serve as templates for other schools looking to adapt. The shift reflects a broader effort to prepare students for jobs in an economy where postsecondary credentials are increasingly essential.
