China's automakers and tech firms unite to build next-gen intelligent machines
Chinese automakers and tech firms are joining forces to develop a new wave of intelligent machines. The goal is to create vehicles and robots that can move, learn, and perform tasks with near-human ability. This push aligns with the country’s latest five-year plan, which prioritises embodied intelligence—systems that blend perception with precise motor skills. Great Wall Motor (GWM) and robotics specialist Unitree have signed a strategic partnership to merge vehicle technology with advanced robotics. GWM will share its expertise in intelligent driving, networked vehicle design, and mass-production integration. Unitree, in turn, brings strengths in motion control, sensor systems, and software development.
The first pilot projects will pair off-road vehicles with robotic dogs. These teams could transport equipment, assist in industrial maintenance, or support research missions. Meanwhile, BYD is already using driverless vans and robotic arms to automate battery assembly in its factories.
GAC, another major automaker, is leveraging its electric vehicle supply chain to enhance robotics development. Xiaomi is also entering the field by embedding robotics into its smart home products. Industry analysts predict the combined market for cars and robots in China could exceed several hundred billion yuan—equivalent to millions of euros—within five years. The collaboration between automakers and robotics firms marks a shift toward machines that operate with greater autonomy. Early applications include industrial automation, logistics, and research support. If successful, these systems could redefine how vehicles and robots interact in both work and daily life.
