Chicago's First Black-Owned Trade School Opens Doors to High-Paying Careers

A new trade school has opened in Calumet Park, offering a fast track to well-paid careers. The Prosperity Building Futures Trades & Entrepreneurship Training Center is the first Black-owned pre-apprenticeship facility in Chicago’s south suburbs. Its short-term courses aim to help students secure jobs with family-sustaining wages. The non-profit centre provides training in construction, carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work. Licensed union instructors, including Rashan Walker, lead the courses. Students can earn nationally recognised certifications and gain access to major unions upon completion.

Funding for the centre comes from state grants, allowing it to offer scholarships for qualifying students. One such student, 19-year-old James Shavers, was accepted into the programme just a week after applying. The school’s focus is on quick, practical training that leads to high-paying roles—some maintenance technicians in the field earn up to £30 an hour. The centre’s mission is to bridge the gap between education and employment. By partnering with unions and industry leaders, it ensures graduates have direct pathways to stable careers.

The Prosperity Building Futures Trades & Entrepreneurship Training Center now provides a new route into skilled trades. Its short-term, accredited programmes are designed to lift workers into long-term, well-compensated jobs. The initiative marks a significant step in expanding career opportunities in the region.
