Zoo's Wishing Pool Coins Fund Woman's Fight Against Leukaemia

A zoo in Nantong has turned a simple refund request into a wave of support for a woman battling leukaemia. After Liu, a local resident, asked for her annual membership fee back to cover medical bills, the park went further—donating all the coins from its wishing pool to her cause.

The gesture has since grown, with the zoo adding extra funds and netizens praising the act of kindness.

Liu, from Nantong, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) on May 7. Her condition worsened when she developed a severe lung infection and repeated bleeding, landing her in the ICU. With medical expenses surpassing 100,000 yuan ($14,700), she reached out to Nantong Forest Safari Park for a refund on her annual membership card.

Instead of just returning her money, the zoo decided to empty its wishing pool. Staff collected 4,361 yuan in coins, which the park then donated to Liu. But the support didn’t stop there. The zoo added another 10,000 yuan ($1,470), bringing the total donation to 14,361 yuan ($2,100). The funds were transferred directly to Liu’s bank account. In response, she expressed deep gratitude, saying, *'They turned all the wishes in the wishing pool into hope for me.'* Online, many applauded the zoo for turning a small act into something far more meaningful, calling it a true example of compassion in action.

The zoo’s decision to refund Liu’s membership and donate the wishing pool coins has eased some of her financial burden. With the total donation now in her account, she can focus more on her recovery. The story has also highlighted how small acts of generosity can grow into wider community support.
