Crackdown on illegal fishing and poaching in Komi's wildlife refuge

Inspectors from the Republic of Komi’s Specially Protected Natural Areas Center carried out raids in the Ilychsky regional wildlife refuge last weekend. The operation aimed to enforce conservation rules and protect local biodiversity as part of the national Ecological Well-Being project. During the raids, officers discovered an angler using banned gillnets for illegal fishing inside the refuge. Another visitor was caught poaching with illegal firearms. Both incidents violated strict protection rules in place for the area.

Inspectors also spoke with local residents and visitors about the refuge’s boundaries, hunting and fishing restrictions, and general conservation regulations. They reminded the public that driving or parking vehicles off designated roads and authorised parking areas is forbidden within protected zones.

The Ministry of Natural Resources has stressed that safeguarding wildlife reserves remains a key priority. Detailed maps, boundaries, and rules for all protected areas are available on the Republic of Komi’s Geoportal and through the Protected Komi mobile app. Authorities urge visitors to review the regulations before entering any specially protected area. Violations, such as illegal fishing or poaching, carry penalties under local conservation laws. The raids highlight ongoing efforts to preserve the region’s natural habitats and wildlife.
