How a Childhood Dream of America Became a 16-Year Journey
A lifelong dream of moving to America shaped the author’s early ambitions. Growing up in London, she imagined a future across the Atlantic—first as a teenager in New York, then as a journalist in Los Angeles. But the path to making it happen was far from straightforward. At 19, a visit to New York sparked a fantasy of working as a writer in Manhattan. Years later, at 30, she received an offer for a senior reporter role in Los Angeles. The opportunity came with a catch: a pay cut and a slight demotion. Despite the drawbacks, she took the job.
Her time in LA lasted just seven weeks. After 16 weeks in total, she returned to London, realising the move hadn’t worked out as planned. The brief experience, however, taught her about stepping outside her comfort zone and living independently.
Three years later, while working remotely across Spain, Italy, and Portugal, a new opportunity arose. At 35, she was offered a job in New York City. This time, she accepted without hesitation.
The decision to move had been years in the making, but personal setbacks—including a breakup after her boyfriend relocated to Italy—had delayed it. Now, the dream she’d held since childhood was finally within reach. The author’s journey to America was marked by false starts and lessons learned. Her short stint in Los Angeles, though difficult, prepared her for the next chapter. Now, at 35, she is set to begin a new role in New York—the city that first inspired her ambitions.
