UN Warns of Unprecedented Nuclear Terrorism Threat Amid Rising Risks
The risk of a nuclear terrorist attack has reached unprecedented levels, according to UN officials. Experts warn that such an incident would trigger severe humanitarian, environmental, and economic fallout worldwide. The threat has grown due to advances in technology and the persistent ambitions of extremist groups.
In 2021, 133 uranium dioxide tablets were stolen in Tajikistan, raising fears they could be trafficked or acquired by terrorist organisations. Al-Qaeda, the group behind the 9/11 attacks, has repeatedly stated its desire to carry out nuclear strikes. Despite these dangers, no nuclear terrorist attack has occurred so far, partly thanks to existing security measures.
The International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism (ICSANT) remains a key tool in preventing such threats. However, around 66 countries have yet to join, not due to a lack of political will but because of limited technical resources. The UN Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) and the European Union (EU) are now assisting governments in fully implementing the convention. Mauro Miedico, Director of the UN Counter-Terrorism Centre, has described the current threat level as the highest ever. New technologies, including militarised drones and artificial intelligence, have made it easier for extremists to plan attacks. Strengthening global legal frameworks has become a top priority for the UN and its member states.
While no nuclear terrorist attack has taken place yet, ongoing support for security measures remains essential. The UN and EU continue to push for wider adoption of ICSANT to close gaps in global defences. Without sustained efforts, experts warn that the risk of a catastrophic incident will keep rising.
