The Payam Method Transforms Piano Lessons with Student-Led Creativity
A new piano teaching approach is gaining attention across the US. The Payam Method, created by educator Payam Khastkhodaei, focuses on keeping students engaged by tailoring lessons to their tastes. Unlike traditional techniques, it avoids early emphasis on scales and strict classical training to foster creativity instead. The method draws inspiration from teaching literature—students explore music they enjoy while learning core skills. Khastkhodaei often starts with well-known pieces like Ode to Joy to build confidence and expression. He encourages pupils to connect emotionally with the music, shaping their interpretations freely.
Lessons blend classical theory with jazz, waltzes, and global styles, offering a broader musical foundation. Payam Music, the school network behind the method, operates both online and in four states: California, Maryland, New York, and Washington. Plans are underway to expand to more locations nationwide. Khastkhodaei designed the approach after observing that rigid instruction often discourages beginners. By prioritising enjoyment and personal choice, he aims to keep motivation high. The method adjusts pacing and repertoire based on each student’s age and interests.
The Payam Method is now available through Payam Music’s growing network of schools. Its flexible, student-led approach contrasts with conventional piano teaching. Further expansion is expected as demand for the programme increases.
