Socrates' Trial Comes to Life in Arnsberg's Bold New Event Series

A dramatic performance of Socrates’ ancient defence speech will take place in Arnsberg this autumn. The free event, scheduled for October 6, 2026, marks the start of a new series called Arnsberg Thinking Spaces. Organisers hope to spark conversations about democracy and the power of questioning.

The performance will be held at the Bürgerzentrum Bahnhof Arnsberg, Clemens-August-Straße 118, at 7:00 PM. Actor Achim Lux will bring to life the speech Socrates delivered over 2,400 years ago during his trial in Athens. The philosopher faced charges for encouraging people to think critically and ask difficult questions.

No tickets or prior knowledge are needed—just an interest in the topic. After the performance, attendees can take part in a discussion about freedom and the role of dissenting voices in society. The event launches *Arnsberg Thinking Spaces*, a project by the City of Arnsberg’s Civic Engagement Initiative. The series will explore life’s big questions and the art of living together, using unusual venues to encourage open dialogue.

The evening aims to highlight how democracy relies on curiosity and debate. By revisiting Socrates’ words, the event connects ancient ideas to modern challenges. Everyone is welcome to attend and contribute to the conversation.
