Philippines unveils bold education reforms at 2026 global forum

The Department of Education (DepEd) showcased its latest reforms at the 2026 Education World Forum (EWF). Philippine officials highlighted key programmes and financial commitments, drawing praise from international delegates. The event also marked discussions on the country’s role in the upcoming ASEAN Work Plan on Education 2026-2030.

At the forum, DepEd Undersecretaries Carmela Oracion, Rafaelita Aldaba, and Fatima Lipp Panontongan led the Philippine delegation. They presented major initiatives, including the School-Based Feeding Program, home-bound storybook deliveries, and the ARAL program. These efforts aim to support learners and improve foundational education across the country.

Panontongan stressed the importance of long-term reforms to better assist teachers and students. She also shared updates on regional cooperation, such as the ASEAN Leaders' Declaration on Foundational Learning (ADFL). The delegation further discussed the Philippines’ involvement in the ASEAN Academic Recovery and Catch-up Program (ASEAN ARC-UP), set for 2026-2030. The DepEd also reported that education funding reached about 4 percent of the country’s GDP in 2026. This financial commitment earned commendations from global counterparts, reinforcing the government’s dedication to strengthening the education sector.

The Philippines’ participation in the EWF highlighted its progress in education reform and regional collaboration. With ongoing programmes and increased funding, the DepEd continues to expand support for teachers and learners. The country’s role in the ASEAN Work Plan further solidifies its commitment to improving educational outcomes in the coming years.
