How Denver's Women United Village Lifts Up Mothers in Need

Every year, Mile High United Way hosts the Women United Village, a one-day event for mothers in underserved communities. The initiative provides essential items for young children while offering families access to vital support services.

This year, 130 families with children aged prenatal to five years old were invited to submit wish lists for needed items. The event aims to give these families a strong start in life by wrapping them in community support.

The Women United Village supplies new items like pack 'n plays, car seats, strollers, and tricycles. Each family also receives diapers, wipes, and other daily necessities. The gifts are bought fresh and tailored to the needs of each household.

Beyond material help, the event connects families to local services. These include parenting resources, mother support groups, the public library, and the 211 helpline. Organisers see it as a way to build long-term stability for parents and children. Rykeshja, a new mother, attended this year’s event and received a double stroller for her one-year-old son and two-month-old daughter. She had previously accessed housing support through United Way’s Bridging the Gap program as she transitioned out of foster care. Her story highlights how the initiative reaches families at critical moments in their lives. Funding for the Women United Village comes partly from the Women United Luncheon. This annual gathering celebrates women as change makers while raising money for tangible help for children in need. Chelsea Carver, Chief Strategy Officer for Mile High United Way, described the event as a powerful symbol of community backing for new mothers and their children.

The Women United Village provides more than just essential items. It links families to ongoing resources and demonstrates collective care for young children. The event’s impact extends beyond a single day, helping parents build a secure foundation for their kids.
