Global backlash against AI erupts as protests unite unlikely allies

Public anger over artificial intelligence is growing worldwide. Protests have erupted in the U.S., Germany, and the UK as concerns mount over job losses, safety risks, and the technology’s broader impact. From demonstrations outside tech headquarters to violent incidents, opposition to AI is uniting unlikely groups.

In April, a Texas man allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at the San Francisco home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The attack followed months of rising tensions over AI’s rapid expansion. Earlier, in February, hundreds of demonstrators marched past the London offices of OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Meta, voicing fears about the technology’s societal effects.

In the U.S., an unusual alliance has formed against unchecked AI development. MAGA Republicans, democratic socialists, union activists, and religious leaders signed a Pro-Human AI declaration, calling for stricter controls. Meanwhile, a Pew Research survey revealed that half of Americans worry about AI’s growing role in daily life. Three-quarters even believe it could threaten humanity’s future. Germany has seen its own wave of resistance. Protesters are demanding stronger laws against digitised sexual violence, a form of abuse enabled by AI tools. Economic fears are also driving dissent. A recent Ifo Institute survey found that German companies plan to cut 27 percent of jobs over the next five years due to AI adoption. Rising electricity costs from power-hungry data centres have added to public frustration. The U.S. military’s use of AI has further fuelled outrage. After reports emerged about its deployment, users began uninstalling ChatGPT in protest. Demonstrations soon followed outside OpenAI’s headquarters. Critics highlight job losses and chatbots’ potential harm to young people’s mental health as key issues in the backlash.

The movement against AI is gaining momentum, drawing support from diverse political and social groups. With protests spreading across multiple countries, governments and tech firms now face growing pressure to address public concerns. The debate over AI’s risks—from job cuts to safety threats—shows no signs of slowing down.
