TU Braunschweig Honors Trailblazers in Sustainability at TUmorrow Awards 2024

Technical University of Braunschweig (TU Braunschweig) has honoured outstanding sustainability efforts through its annual TUmorrow Awards. The ceremony celebrated students, teachers, and projects that align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Four prizes were awarded, each carrying a €500 reward and organised by the university’s Green Office alongside the Braunschweig University Association (BHB). The awards covered four categories: student engagement, bachelor’s and master’s theses, and teaching. The Union of Muslim Students took home the student engagement prize for hosting an intercultural iftar during Ramadan. The event promoted social cohesion while reducing waste—attendees brought their own containers, and the menu was entirely vegan.

In the academic categories, Lukas Jungwirth won the bachelor’s thesis award for designing a modular, parametric dry toilet system tailored for the Global South. Paul Knauer received the master’s thesis prize for his research on sustainable housing alternatives to detached homes. Both projects addressed pressing environmental and social challenges through practical solutions. The teaching award went to Professor Christof Backhaus and Bettina Herz for their master’s course on sustainability transformation management. The course equips students with tools to drive systemic change, reinforcing the university’s commitment to embedding sustainability across its programmes. All winning entries were selected based on their direct contribution to the UN SDGs. The awards aim to highlight innovative approaches to sustainability while encouraging wider participation in tackling global challenges.

The TUmorrow Awards recognise concrete actions that advance sustainability at TU Braunschweig. Each winning project—from waste-reducing events to academic research—demonstrates how the university community is working toward the UN’s global targets. The €500 prizes and public acknowledgement also serve to inspire further engagement with sustainability issues across campus.
