British retirees find a new life in Chiang Mai after decades of global moves

Peter and Rita Millard have settled in Chiang Mai, Thailand, after decades of moving between countries. The British couple first met in Birmingham while working in healthcare before taking early retirement in the late 1990s. Their latest move follows years of living in France, Malta, and a brief return to Britain for health reasons. The couple began their retirement by building a small holiday home in southern France. They later relocated to Lodève, a quiet town around 50 kilometres from Montpellier. In 2012, practical concerns led them to Malta, where they spent seven years before returning to Britain.

Their time back in the UK was marked by health challenges. Peter underwent triple bypass heart surgery during the pandemic, leaving them stranded in England for nearly three years. They tried living in a senior residence but left after just three months, frustrated by rigid schedules and poor food. After reading about a senior resort in Chiang Mai, they decided to move there in February 2023. Peter sees the facility as a form of 'insurance'—a safety net for whichever partner might one day be left alone. The couple now live independently but with access to support when needed. Before retiring, Peter retrained as a podiatrist and ran his own practice for five years. Both had originally worked in healthcare in Birmingham, where their relationship began.

The Millards now call Chiang Mai home, having moved there in early 2023. Their decision follows a lifetime of relocations, from France to Malta and back to Britain. The care facility provides a balance of independence and security as they plan for the future.
