Philippine educators unite for groundbreaking film studies training in 2023

The Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) and the Philippine Association of Communication Educators (PACE) joined forces in July 2023 to host FDCP x PACE: Training the Teachers. Held at Mapúa University’s Makati campus, the programme brought together over 130 educators from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The event aimed to enhance teaching methods in film studies through workshops, forums, and screenings. The programme opened with a keynote address by FDCP Chairperson and CEO Jose Javier Reyes. His talk, The Film Teacher and the Study of National Culture and History, set the tone for the learning sessions ahead.

A commemorative screening of Lino Brocka’s classic *Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag* followed. After the film, Dr. Roland Tolentino and Dr. Anne Frances Sangil led a detailed discussion on its themes and significance. Documentary filmmaking took centre stage in a forum featuring Adjani Arumpac and Kristoffer Brugada. Moderated by She Andes, the session explored techniques and challenges in non-fiction storytelling. Animation as a medium was examined in a panel with Avid Liongoren, Carl Joseph Papa, and Eru Petrasanta. Keith Sicat moderated the discussion, highlighting its role in modern narrative techniques. Global cinema was analysed after a screening of *Anatomy of a Fall*. Dr. Patrick Campos and Tito Valiente broke down the film’s structure, with Jason Tan Liwag guiding the conversation. Screenwriters Dustin Celestino and Giancarlo Abrahan conducted a crash course on story development and scriptwriting. Producers Khaye Medina and Mica Oliveros then shared practical advice on production management and film producing. The event wrapped up with closing remarks from Mapúa School of Media Studies Dean David Corpuz. A memorandum of agreement was also signed between PACE, FDCP, and Mapúa University to formalise future collaborations.

The programme equipped educators with new tools and perspectives for teaching film. Over 130 participants from across the Philippines attended the sessions, screenings, and discussions. The partnership between FDCP, PACE, and Mapúa University now paves the way for ongoing initiatives in film education.
