Astana's May celebrations blend drifting, ballet and immersive art in one vibrant weekend

A series of cultural and sporting events will take place in Astana over the next few days. From concerts and ballet to horse parades and motorsport, the city has lined up a diverse programme for residents and visitors. Many of the events mark the early May celebrations with performances, exhibitions, and competitions. The festivities begin on May 7 with the Central Asia Drift Show at ASP Arena Konaev. The three-day event will showcase high-speed drifting competitions and car stunts.

On May 8, the Zhastar Theater hosts the concert Zhenis Zhyry (Song of Victory). The evening will feature classical, folk, and wartime pieces by Kazakh and international composers. That same day, the Musical Theater of the Young Spectator stages Shamshi, a local musical production.

An immersive art exhibition also opens on May 8 at Catharsis Multimedia Art Gallery. Running until July 19, the display promises interactive installations and digital art experiences. Meanwhile, the ballet Spartacus—composed by Aram Khachaturian in 1941—will be performed, telling the story of resistance against oppression and the enduring spirit of heroism.

The following day, May 9, starts with a horse parade at the Prestige Equestrian Club. Later, FC Astana takes on FC Qyzyljar at Astana Arena in a league football match. In the evening, Carpe Diem art studio will hold a special art gathering, offering workshops and live demonstrations. The events span music, sport, and visual arts, providing options for different interests. Most activities are scheduled across May 7–9, with the art exhibition continuing through mid-July. Organisers expect strong attendance for both cultural performances and competitive events.
