Anthropic Assembles Elite Board to Guide AI's Role in Higher Education

Anthropic has formed a new advisory board to shape the role of AI in higher education. The group will guide the development of Claude, the company’s AI assistant, for teaching, research, and learning. Former Yale president Rick Levin will lead the board as its chair. The advisory board includes prominent figures from academia and education. Among them are David Leebron, the former president of Rice University, and Matthew Rascoff, Vice Provost for Digital Education at Stanford. Julie Schell, Assistant Vice Provost of Academic Technology at the University of Texas, Austin, also joins the team. Other members include Yolanda Watson Spiva, President of Complete College America, and James DeVaney, Special Advisor to the President at the University of Michigan.

Rick Levin’s role involves advising Anthropic on creating ethically responsible AI policies and products for universities. Under his leadership, the board has already contributed to three new AI fluency courses. These programmes aim to help educators and students develop skills in using AI effectively. The push for AI in education is gaining wider recognition. The 2025 RTIH Innovation Awards will highlight AI as a major focus area, reflecting its growing importance in academic settings.

The advisory board will steer Claude’s integration into higher education, ensuring alignment with ethical and academic standards. With experienced leaders from top institutions, the group aims to shape AI tools that support teaching, research, and student success. The new courses and industry awards further signal AI’s expanding role in education.
