11 Waste Pickers Defy Odds, Pass Class 10 After Decades Away from School
A group of 11 women waste pickers in Navi Mumbai have passed their Class 10 exams after returning to education. Their success comes despite long breaks from studying, with some stepping back into classrooms after 15 to 35 years away. The journey began after the women watched the Marathi film Ata Thambaycha Naay, which inspired them to resume their studies. They soon enrolled in classes, determined to complete their schooling.
To help them prepare, they were given paid leave for the final two months before the exams. This allowed them to focus fully on their studies without financial stress. Many also faced resistance at home but found family support growing once they began passing their tests. Vrushali Magdum, one of the successful candidates, stressed that education has no age limit. She said their achievement proves that determination can break any barrier. Dr Prashant Thorat, who supported the initiative, added that their success would motivate others to pursue learning at any stage of life. Now, the women plan to continue their education, aiming to reach graduation level.
The group’s success marks a turning point in their lives. With paid leave and growing family support, they have overcome long gaps in education. Their next goal is to progress further in their studies, setting an example for others in their community.
