Torrevieja's La Plasa Market to Become a Gourmet Food Hub by 2027
The Torrevieja Town Council has awarded the concession for the new La Plasa market to Origen Murcia, which will manage the space for the next ten years. The project involves a plan to transform the space, located on the ground level and mezzanine of the building and spanning an area of more than 2,000 square metres, into a gourmet food market, which is said to rival those of major Spanish hubs like Madrid, Sevilla and Murcia.
La Plasa to become a round-the-clock attraction with revitalised market
During the project, La Plasa will be remade into a market, where fresh, local, and gourmet gastronomic products will be sold. The plan aims to turn the area into a meeting point that is active throughout the whole day (the space currently closes at noon) and revitalises the urban centre of Torrevieja, becoming a dynamic and open space.
This new market will be divided into several areas where visitors can both shop and eat on-site. One of the most important aspects of the new renovation is the continued presence of the traditional market that is already established there, allowing the current sellers to stay in their areas.
Second and third floors also to receive makeover
In addition to these areas, officials will launch a new process to determine how the second and third floors in the complex should be used, which is not included in the current concession. Officials will analyse ideas in order to determine the best course of action to create a space that Torrevieja residents and tourists will want to visit round the clock.
"No disruptive activities or anything that could disturb the peace will be implemented," said mayor of Torrevieja Eduardo Dolón about the new project. "We want to study rigorously which uses are most beneficial for Torrevieja and start a new process with all the guarantees that are necessary."
Breathing new life into the centre of Torrevieja
The exciting new gastronomic market is projected to be up and running by the end of 2026 or by early 2027. The project represents an investment of around one million euros and the creation of some 230 new jobs.
"We want to breathe new life into La Plasa, get people in, generate expenditure and energise the whole of the surrounding area," said Mayor Dolón. "Great opportunity for the now and for the future of the centre of Torrevieja."
