Russian students shift focus to Physics and Chinese for 2026 exams

A new analysis of study guide sales reveals shifting trends among Russian students preparing for the Unified State Exam (USE). The Chitai-Gorod bookstore chain tracked purchases from November to April, highlighting changes in subject popularity and study habits for 2026. The top five most in-demand subjects this year are Social Studies, Biology, History, English, and Physics. Physics replaced Chemistry, which fell out of the leading group compared to 2025. Literature, meanwhile, remains the least popular subject for exam preparation.

Sales of pocket reference guides saw a sharp increase, rising 2.6 times compared to last year. The most frequently bought guides cover History, Mathematics, and Russian. Beyond English, Chinese has become the most popular foreign language among students. German and French follow behind, reflecting growing interest in non-English language studies.

The data shows a clear shift in student priorities, with Physics gaining ground and Chinese language guides in higher demand. The surge in pocket reference sales also suggests a preference for concise study materials. These trends will likely influence how publishers and educators prepare for future exam cycles.
