Pope Leo XIV assumes role as bishop of Rome in historic ceremony
Pope Leo XIV has officially taken possession of the Basilica of St. John Lateran as the bishop of Rome. The historic event took place on May 25, marking his first Mass in the city’s diocesan cathedral. His election also makes him the first U.S.-born pontiff in history. Before the Mass, the new pope met with Rome’s mayor, Roberto Gualtieri. Later, at noon, he led a crowd in St. Peter’s Square in praying the Regina Coeli.
During his homily, Pope Leo XIV highlighted the importance of listening, drawing on the example of the apostles in the Acts of the Apostles. He reaffirmed the commitment of his predecessor, Pope Francis, to listening first to the Holy Spirit and then to others. The pontiff also expressed his wish to support the Diocese of Rome’s process of listening and shared decision-making with the faithful. In his address, he called on the faithful to unite in prayer and charity as they move forward together.
The ceremony solidified Pope Leo XIV’s role as the bishop of Rome. His emphasis on listening and collaboration sets the tone for his leadership. The faithful have been encouraged to engage actively in the life of the Church through prayer and charitable action.
